Organisations to tell you've moved
When you move house you need to inform a number of organisations about your new address. In many cases this is essential as an incorrect address can invalidate contracts, for example your home insurance policy may not continue to be valid if you move to a more risky neighbourhood. Therefore it’s essential you send change of address information as soon as possible.
Here is a list of organisations you need to send your new address too:
- Banks and building societies – avoid complications with your billing address by letting them know in plenty of time
- Doctors/dentists – you may require swift medical care after you move house and your new doctor will need access to your records
- Churches and religious organisations – children’s societies will also need to be informed
- Insurance providers – this is essential as your policies may become void if you do supply your correct home address
- Schools – inform your child’s school they will be moving and arrange for their records to be transferred
- Solicitor – particularly if you have set out your will in writing
- Magazine subscriptions – make sure you get your magazine delivered to your new house or someone else will be reading it
- Post office – inform your post office you are moving. You can set up a re-mailing service so any post sent to your old address will be forwarded to your new one.
- Inland Revenue – inform the taxman as soon as possible to avoid stressful complications
- DSS – your benefits may suffer setbacks if you don’t inform the DSS of your new address
- Utilities – take up to date meter readings and let your suppliers know you’ll be moving at least two days before you do
- TV Licensing – update your TV license records as early as possible to avoid problems
- Vets – find a vet in your new area and let them know your address as your pet may need to be seen soon after you move. If you’re only moving a short way away let your current vet know your change of address
- DVLA – the DVLA will need to update your driving license and vehicle registration certificate. It’s a criminal offence to have an incorrect address on either
- Passport office – your passport may need updating, so put your change of address in writing
- Premium bond companies – complete and return your holders’ card
