    Moving to New York

If you're moving abroad to New York City, our guide to an international relocation to the most populous city in the United States can help you prepare for your house move to the Big Apple.

    Moving to New York

Every year, roughly a quarter of a million people move to New York City.

The Big Apple welcomes a high volume of Brits on holiday, but a large number of ex-pats moving overseas to USA make New York a permanent home each year as well.

Planning an international move to New York can seem like a daunting task, which is why we’ve compiled some helpful advice to help those moving for work or play make the most out of their time in NYC.

    Local Areas

When it comes to real estate in New York, there’s lots of choice, but not necessarily lots of space. Add to that, prices for both renting and buying are some of the most expensive in the world, with the average rent for a two-bedroom apartment coming in at $2,985 (about £2,315).

Ditmas Park is beyond Brooklyn, an area filled with tree-lined avenues, community parks, and schools. Over 30% of residents are families, ideal if you are relocating to New York with kids in tow.

Central spots like Soho, Chelsea and the Flatiron District are popular with wealthy professionals, while emerging markets in Bedford–Stuyvesant (Bed-Stuy) and East Harlem offer something stylish for those on a more modest budget.

The Port of New York and New Jersey is one of the busiest in America, and handled over 6.3 million cargo containers in 2016, so wherever you choose to settle in New York, we can help you find an international removal company to give you a stress free overseas relocation to the USA.

    Amenities & Leisure

When we talk about New York’s iconic landmarks, museums, galleries, tourist attractions, world-class food and nightlife, little needs to be said in the way of introduction.

For an authentic experience, there are plenty of things to do as a single professional or a family. Take in the Brooklyn flea market, enjoy some java in your local artisan coffee house, or stop for lunch in one of the many fantastic Italian restaurants throughout the city.

Central Park is a great place to walk, run, cycle and take the kids out for a fun-filled day, and is made even more magical in the winter with the addition of ice-skating.

    Transport in New York

While there is an extensive subway system in NYC, it’s notoriously unreliable.

Trains are particularly troublesome first thing in the mornings and on weekends, leaving many New Yorkers preferring to walk where possible, so if you’re new to the Big Apple and looking for a way to save money, opting to walk could be a big help.

Famous yellow taxis are readily available, but now face tough competition from rivals Uber.

    Schools in New York

The good news is, a slew of new public and private schools have opened throughout Manhattan and outer boroughs, but this has also made it harder to decide between neighbourhoods.

Forest Hills is situated close to midtown, and is home to 12 schools, along with idyllic Georgian townhouses that are great for family life. Head to the Bronx and suburban Riverdale, and you’ll find 28 schools from which to choose, including the Marble Hill High School for International Studies.

One of the key things to note as you move to New York from the UK is the seasonal variance in weather. In the summer, temperatures can rise to over 85°F (29°C), but can drop to well below freezing in the winter, when snowfall is common.

Top tip!: Looking to find Houston Street, Manhattan? One sure way to giveaway your newbie status is to pronounce it like the Houston of Texas. In New York, it’s pronounced Hows-ton.
