...In a recent survey of 900 people, a quarter of them already home-owners - by the property website reallymoving.com, one third were unclear about what 'conveyancing' means. Half thought it involved arranging a survey. One in five believed it was part of the estate agent's job and a quarter assumed it meant negotiating the price for them.
"Most people realise there is a lengthy legal procedure when buying and selling property, but many are unaware of the actual process and who does what at each stage," comments Rosemary Rogers, Director of reallymoving.com. "It's important to know who to chase and when to make sure your purchase is progressing and you should get a breakdown of costs before you begin."
So to set the record straight, conveyancing is the legal process of transferring property ownership - and it is done by your solicitor.
