Press Release: Postcode data release

01/03/2008

Edinburgh, Bristol and Sheffield are
THE most popular cities to live in...

Edinburgh (EH), Bristol (BS) and Sheffield (S) are most likely to retain people than ANY other City in the UK according to analysis of statistics by Reallymoving.com, the leading website for home moving services.

The figures come from a study of 36,000 home-movers who turned to Reallymoving.com between July – December 2007 to source instant removals quotes.

More than 57 per cent of home-movers in Edinburgh (EH), Bristol (BS) and Sheffield (S) indicated that, when it came to moving home, they intended to move within the same postcode area rather than moving to a neighbouring postcode district or even further afield.

Other cities with particularly loyal residents were identified as Birmingham (B) with 55 per cent, Liverpool (L) with 54 per cent, Leeds (LS) with 51 per cent and Cardiff (CF) with 50 per cent of people staying put.

However, home movers in Dorchester (DT) Salisbury (SP) and Bath (BA) indicted that they would be moving out of these historic towns.  The analysis of statistics found that only 19 per cent of home-movers in Dorchester would be staying in the same postcode area, while in Salisbury the figure was 24 per cent and in Bath 28 per cent.

In other findings, the survey suggested:

  • Home-movers are fleeing West London (WC). Only 13 per cent of home movers in West London were staying in that postcode area.
  • Of those moving to other postcode areas, most move to nearby destinations, often to smaller commuter towns.  For example, 19 per cent of moves to Halifax (HX) were from Bradford (BD), 19 per cent of moves to Ilford (IG) were from East London (E), and 14 per cent to Dartford (DA) were from East London (SE).
  • There is a flight from Cambridge to West London (WC) and from Birmingham (B) to Kirkwall (KW).  16 per cent of moves to West London (WC) were from Cambridge (CB), and 16 per cent of moves to Kirkwall (KW) were from Birmingham (B).
  • In another surprising migration, 10 per cent of moves to Exeter (EX) were from Redhill (RH), Surrey.

Rosie Rogers, Co-Founder and Marketing Manager of Reallymoving.com, said
