Professor Property Advice

We were involved in a chain which collapsed near exchange last year and the solicitor billed us for almost the full amount. But the same thing happened to a friend and her solicitor waited until she had another buyer so she could complete the sale of her house. Our solicitor wasn't keen, but eventually agreed to wait rather than to bill us for an aborted job. We are now close to exchange on a new property with new buyers for ours; how much extra should I expect the solicitor to add to the bill for the chain which collapsed last year?

There’s no set answer to this. It does depend on the work involved. There bill should be reasonable and you should be fully informed before proceeding as to what they will charge. If you feel you were not complain! Talk to the solicitor first. Then the senior partner, then the Law Society.
