Newsflash: cabinet reshuffle and new housing minister
10 January 2018
By Andi Michael
This week Theresa May’s cabinet reshuffle was announced, with particular attention paid to the property industry.
Sajid Javid remains in his role, with a new title: secretary of state for housing, communities and local government (shortened in the media to the incredibly catchy MoHoCoLoGo
For some, this change will reflect the Prime Minister’s intention to make housing her ‘personal mission’, but for others it appears merely symbolic
. The hope is that the consistency of keeping Mr Javid in his role will allow him to continue with housing plans that have been announced, but not yet carried out.
This is not so for Alok Sharma, as the housing minister has been replaced by Dominic Raab. Raab will be the 7th
housing minister since 2010, (and the 16th in 20 years since the role was created
). Mr Raab previously worked at the Ministry of Justice. Mr Sharma will now be employment minister in the Department for Work and Pensions.
It is unclear what these reshuffles could mean for the property industry and housing – with Sajid Javid calling for evidence into the housing process in late 2017, many wonder if the momentum built up in certain projects will continue, and whether the goal of making home ownership easier
and more streamlined will be forgotten.
