The Help to Buy Equity loan comes with a 5 year interest-free period. When you reach the 5 year mark, what choices are available to you?

The Help to Buy Equity Loan scheme closed for new applications in October 2022 and ended in March 2023. It is no longer available in England.
You can sell your Help to Buy house at any point. It is a good idea to have paid off the equity loan before selling, if possible.
If you have not paid back the equity loan, it can make the selling process more complex than selling a normal property, as you will have to get the HCA (Homes and Communities Agency) involved in the process.
You can remortgage a Help to Buy home. However, the number of lenders that offer this is limited. Many lenders will only accept you if you’ve paid off the equity loan before you remortgage, as there is an increased borrowing risk.
