Mr Shifter was formed in 2003. We chose the name from the PG Tips advert featuring two chimps carrying a piano down the stairs. Can you ever forget Irene Handel saying, "Cooee Mr Shifter" causing the father and son to drop the piano and the immortal lines that followed. "Dad did you know the piano's on my foot" to which the father replies, "You hum it son- I'll play it!"
No, we don't drop pianos but we are a father and son operation. In fact the family connection has grown because not only has my son in law joined the business but my 15 year old son helps us out as well. So you can rest assured of a hands-on personal service which is both efficient and reliable with a bit of banter thrown in for good measure!
Where are we?
We are based in York just of the A64 in Bishopthorpe. We have vehicles capable of doing both large and small moves and a team of trained uniformed workers who take the stress out of your move. We have quick access to the A1/M1/M62.
What services do we provide?
We offer a free no obligation quoting service where we get to know you and your needs and you get to know us. We can offer you all sorts of advice on moving, in fact feel free to pick our brains!! Moving is a stressful experience and we aim to make it as stress-free as possible.
Removal work is hard graft but we tend to do it with a smile! But please remember not to pack the kettle!!!

Fantastic service, lovely guys. Really careful with packing and they were really nice when the move was a very stressful day. They just got on with it and got things sorted. They visited beforehand to estimate the job which I really liked rather than just an online form like some companies. Would use again and recommend to friends.

We were very very happy with this company from contact to completion. The move was made much less stressful by the consideration and kindness these guys showed us as our move had to be rearranged at the last minute. We were impressed by their organisation , non stop hard work and all the support they gave us when our move had to be rescheduled. We will definitely recommend this company as we believe we did receive a service over and above what we paid for so a big thank you to Paul and Greg for everything.

Paul was excellent, and really helped things go smoothly on the day of the move. He was very organised and methodical, and overall provided a great service for a very reasonable price. I highly recommend Mr Shifter!

I would not recommend using this company.
Well where do I begin with this one.
I am a great believer in stressing to a client that they must be organised to make a move go smoothly, sadly this was not the case on this move.
Whenever I go to quote on a move I always explain to the customer what to do to make a move go as stress-free as possible.
The first couple of boxes we picked up just fell apart. We then proceeded to re-tape 20 plus boxes to make sure they were in a state to get on the van. The cardboard boxes used were so old that they were not able to be stacked properly.
Another example of the packing we had to contend with was a box that had contained a large upright fridge freezer was filled with an array of kitchen items. The box was so heavy that 3 men struggled to get it on the van.
The lady for whom we were carrying out the move was out walking her dogs during the whole loading procedure which created its own problems.
We decided to move her out over two days to make sure we got her out of the house in good time. It was just as well as there was so much packing left to do. She had a male friend who constantly said how disorganised everything was.
Because of the nature of the move I had to put an extra van on the job because we could not load the vans as efficiently as possible.
On the day of the move which incidentally was 30 miles from our base in York was loaded by 9am. We then had three vans to be driven 164 miles to our destination.
Once we began unloading it soon became apparent that the house this lady had rented wasn't big enough to take the vast volume of items she needed moving. She had a large garage at her old address and a small shed at her new address so certain items had to be left out in the open air as the house was full to the rafters.
She had two large electric bed frames needed taking upstairs but it was pointed out to her that the structure of the staircase would prevent us getting them upstairs. She insisted we give it a go which we did but it turned out to be fruitless which didn't please her. I have been doing this job for 10 years so I can often see if there is going to be a problem. We were then asked to take the bed to another address which we gladly did.
The last hour of the move was carried out in pouring rain which didn't help. On completion of the move no mention of the bill was brought up even she was so glad to have left Yorkshire for good. Having mentioned the fact to her she just said to invoice her.
To get one star for service is quite frankly an insult.
As regards value; the automated quote was £750 and I carried out the move for the total price of £695. This entailed 3 men travelling 300 miles in 3 vans spread over 2 days. The extra van was not charged for so I personally made a pittance out of the job.
I pride myself in doing things right on a move and am upset that I get this review from somebody who clearly hadn't prepared properly.
